📣Breaking News: Frank Ortiz Dog Park is getting a new safety barrier!

The Dog Park Project is thrilled to announce a significant improvement project in collaboration with the City of Santa Fe Parks Department. On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, a day-long improvement project will occur, constructing a new timber barrier to separate the parking lots from the dog park. The new barrier initiative will significantly enhance safety by keeping vehicles out of the park and ensuring a clear separation between the parking areas and the park.

The community and local businesses have generously sponsored this initiative by donating and discounting tools and materials. Sponsors include Tito's Handmade Vodka, Big Jo True Value Hardware, 1610 Hardware, Midwest Fastener, Big R Stores, Builders FirstSource, Aspen Custom Homes, Home Depot, and Española Humane.

We thank all of our sponsors and supporters!

ATTENTION:  Atypical Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease

Like many of you, we are trying to sort out the implications for our dogs of a mysterious illness called Atypical Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease. Hundreds of cases have been reported since August in several U.S. states.

Symptoms of this disease mimic an upper respiratory disease and include lethargy, coughing, sneezing, and discharge of the eyes and/or nose. Diagnostic tests for common respiratory diseases are not registering this illness, and it has shown to be resistant to standard treatments, according to Dr. Ryan Scholtz, an Oregon State Veterinarian who has been studying the disease.

While fatalities are rare, dog owners should take precautions until more is understood about the illness and treatment is available.

Some Recommendations:
• Be sure your dogs are up-to-date on all vaccines including
• Bordetella, Parainfluenza, Canine Influenza
• Keep sick dogs at home and seek veterinary care
• Avoid great numbers of dogs to minimize exposure
• Avoid communal water bowls

The Dog Park Project is very excited to share this news from Carlos and Sylvia Garcia who owned the land adjacent to the Ortiz Dog Park:

"We are happy to notify everyone who has been interested in the fate our land next to the Ortiz Dog Park that we donated the land to Habitat for Humanity with the express condition that access to the Dog Park be granted and preserved. Many people have been involved, concerned, and interested about how the land might be utilized, and all of them deserve our thanks and recognition. We thank the friends of the Dog Park, Mayor Webber and City Staff, Councilors Lindell and Mike Garcia, Habitat for Humanity, and many members of the Community for their work on this project. Although passions may have flared, they served ultimately to guide us to lasting benefit for those who enjoy the open spaces of the Dog Park and those who desperately need an affordable place to live. We are grateful to have played a part in making this happen! With our kindest regards to all.” - From Sylvia and Carlos Garcia

A HUGE thank you to the Garcia’s for their generous donation. We truly appreciate that they have made this donation of their land for the benefit of dogs and their owners. The Dog Park Project is very grateful for their kind gift.

Exciting Dog Park News…A New Shade Structure!

Shade has long been in short supply at the park.  And we have all wished for a refuge from the sun for dogs and their people.

So here is the big news.....after several years of fundraising and obtaining permission from the City of Santa Fe and the Environmental Services Division, The Dog Park Project has purchased a large new shade structure.  It will be installed approximately 10 yards from the 3 dog water fountains. Construction will begin in the coming weeks.

We are so grateful to our donors who made this shade structure possible! We couldn’t have done this without their immense generosity and kindness.

This photo shows the style of the shade structure with similar colors. The roof will be a beautiful sage green and the posts will be beige—this will blend in nicely with the surrounding terrain.

We are very excited and look forward to sharing the shade with you and your pups very soon!

A huge shoutout of gratitude to the City of Santa Fe Parks and Recreation and their team for the amazing installation of 4 new memorial benches for our donors!

And they did it so quickly and just in time for a beautiful memorial event to celebrate the life of one of our dear friends, Barbara McIntyre. Barbara's family traveled from Canada and Australia to Santa Fe where we hosted a lovely celebration in Wilsonville for Barbara and her best furry pal, Wilson. The Dog Park Project's board members and friends came together to help make this event so memorable.

Our sincere thanks to all who attended and all who pitched in to help.

Thanks so much to City of Santa Fe Parks and Recreation for repairing the dog water fountain which is located under the brown & green shade structure next to the large parking lot!

Our pups are excited to quench their thirst in 2 different locations at the Dog Park on these warm Summer days.

Special thanks to the entire Parks Team including Ricardo Espinosa, Vincent Jaramillo, Darren Payne, Dan Griego, Michael Baca and Pete Archuleta.

Update about Frank Ortiz Dog Park & City Council Meeting:

The City Council will not be holding a public hearing on Carlos Garcia's land donation this Wednesday, May 25.

Conversations between the City and Mr. Garcia are in progress, and we understand that the parties will be meeting soon to discuss the donation.

The Dog Park Project supports this process and the acceptance of Carlos Garcia’s land donation if it is viable and acceptable to all parties concerned.

We will keep you posted about any resolutions being put forward by the City Council regarding this donation.

If you have any questions, please email us at info@thedogparkproject.org. Thank you.

May 18, 2022

Yesterday a dog was injured by the barbed wire fence that Carlos Garcia installed along the well-established trail at the Dog Park. Today Carlos Garcia has been issued a stop-work order by Lawrence River, Land Use Compliance officer for the city of Santa Fe, for the following code violations:

1. Constructing a fence without obtaining a building permit
2. Constructing a fence in a flood plain
3. Constructing a fence across an arroyo
4. Constructing a fence using prohibited materials (Barbed Wire)=
5. Cutting and removing significant trees (see attached photo of destruction of trees)

Mr. Garcia's installation of a barbed-wire fence poses a clear and present danger to dogs and people at the park. He initially cut off access to the main trail at the park that has been used 365 days a year for over 20 years. While he has recently opened 15-foot sections to allow access to the historic trail, he has not removed hundreds of feet of barbed wire fencing that cut across the park and now pose a serious threat to dogs and people. This is an area where owners routinely throw balls for their dogs.

It is our position that this and other actions recently taken by Mr. Garcia have served to inflame the public unnecessarily. Individuals sympathetic to his cause have urged patrons and visitors of the park to demand that the City accept Mr. Garcia's donation through the use of social media posts and the distribution of flyers at the park and on visitors' windshields. These posts and flyers urge people to attend the City Council Meeting on the 25th of May to demand that the City accept his "generous" donation.

But here are the facts:

1) Mr. Garcia has not presented the City of Santa Fe with a donation letter or proposal.
2) He never reached out to The Dog Park Project prior to installing his signs and fencing or ask for help in furthering his cause.
3) He has not sat down with the Mayor, District 1 City Councilors (district 1 is where the Frank Ortiz Dog Park is located.) to discuss his plans.

The Dog Park Project asserts that this trail has long been understood as a historic public prescriptive trail easement. A vast number of our visitors have been walking the trail in excess of 20 years with their dogs. It has been used for decades and acknowledged by neighbors and other adjacent landowners including Mr. Garcia (until recently) as an integral part of the main trail at the park. We call upon Mr. Garcia to remove his barbed wire fencing IMMEDIATELY.  And if he intends to offer his parcel of land to the City of Sante Fe as a donation, we ask that he approach the City with a written proposal and indicate his willingness to sit down at the table with the Mayor, the City Councilors and The Dog Park Project.

May 14, 2022

Please contact Carlos Garcia, the owner of the lot that is being fenced off, to express your strong objection to the loss of access to the trails on that lot. His email is carlos@sunvista.com

The Frank S. Ortiz Dog Park is a valuable community asset enjoyed by countless members of our community. This Dog Park includes a system of trails that extend beyond the park and includes trails that have existed for many decades on undeveloped adjacent private parcels.

One such parcel is the vacant 6.08-acre lot owned by Carlos and Sylvia Garcia that abuts the southern boundary of the Dog Park. Historical aerial photographs show that the trails used by the public on this lot date back more than thirty years. As a result of the public’s continued use of the trails over this lot, there is a public prescriptive easement that allows for the continued use of the trails on the lot owned by the Garcia's.

Unfortunately, the Garcia's are installing a barbed-wire fence along the boundary of their lot. This fence cuts off access to these trails which are an integral part of the trail system in the Dog Park and provide important access to the Dog Park from the neighborhoods located to the South.

The Dog Park Project, the 501(c)3 non-profit organization which adopted the Dog Park, strongly objects to the fencing off of the trails and hopes to find a solution that would permit their continued use for the benefit of the community. Our mission is to provide, in conjunction with the City of Santa Fe Parks Division, enhancements to the Frank S. Ortiz Dog Park that will aid in the enjoyment of dogs and their people.

We encourage you to share this with anyone who may be interested in helping to save our Dog Park.

Sincerely,

The Dog Park Project Team

Kennel Cough (aka Bordetella)

We have been informed that kennel cough is again circulating among dogs in Santa Fe. Kennel cough, also known as Bordetella or Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), is a common respiratory disease in dogs. It’s very contagious and easily spreads through the air. Your dog can become infected with the disease anywhere. Your dog may encounter an infected dog at a park, on a walk, or through the fence of your own backyard.

NOTE:  We have removed portable dog water bowls from the Dog Park as a precaution.

Signs of Kennel Cough:
- Dry, hacking cough which often sounds like something is caught in the dog’s throat.
- Gagging or coughing up phlegm
- Sneezing
- Nasal discharge
- Mild fever (above 102.5°F)
- Lethargy
- Decreased appetite

Treatment:
- Contact your vet
- If your dog is coughing, keep them away from other dogs.
-Keep your dog isolated for at least 7 days after he/she has stopped coughing.

Holidays 2020

Dear Dog Park Friends,

As 2020 comes to a close, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for your continued support.

While we’ve all faced unprecedented challenges that we never imagined this year, this time has underscored the importance of friendship and connectivity, of love and kindness, and of strength and resilience. These are things we’ve seen time and again through the actions of our friends, patrons, and visitors.

Your generous gifts to The Dog Park Project continue to contribute to a Dog Park where everyone (furry and human) can enjoy the vast expanses of open trails and spaces with breathtaking vistas of Santa Fe.

Here are some examples of what WE have accomplished TOGETHER in 2020:

1.  We installed 3 dog water fountains thanks to the generous donation of Bill Thornton and the hard work of our colleagues at the Parks Department.

2.  We began the first phase of creating a small dog park by installing a fence enclosure. Wilsonville came to fruition thanks to the vision and generosity of Barbara McIntyre. The next phases will include seating and shade for humans, and a play area and water for dogs.

3.  We installed 10 memorial benches in specially chosen locations throughout the park—as always, we couldn’t have done it without our donors and the essential help of our Parks Department team.

Thank you for your continued support of The Dog Park Project. If you have not already done so, please consider making an end-of-year gift so that together, we can continue to make enhancements to our beloved Dog Park.

Dog Water Fountains Temporarily Shut Off for Repairs

October 15, 2020

Dear Dog Park Friends,

We hope that you, your furry pals, and your loved ones are staying healthy and enjoying this gorgeous Fall weather. We’re grateful to have our Dog Park as an amazing resource for walking and enjoying the outdoors. Below are some recent updates to share with you:

More Dog Water Fountains—Please Donate Today!
Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received about the existing 3 dog water fountains, we plan to install more year-round fountains near the small parking lot at the North end of the Park. There will be 2 fountains inside Wilsonville for small dogs and 2 fountains outside Wilsonville for dogs big and small.

We’ve already raised almost 2/3 of the funds necessary through the generous contributions of Barbara McIntyre and her friends.

We still need to raise $3,500 to make this a reality. These funds cover the purchase of the fountains as well as the cost of materials for trenching and piping.

Please help us by making a donation today

Wilsonville
Barbara’s friends and colleagues are collaborating on the design and master plan for Wilsonville. This will comprise a designated trail, a climbing structure and playing field for dogs, and shade for humans. We’ll keep you posted with more updates.

More Memorial Benches
We’re working with the Parks Department to install 3 more memorial benches by end of October. Keep a lookout for them around the park as each donor has chosen a meaningful location.

Loss of Robin Hardin & Katherine Carter
It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of two dear friends and true lovers of dogs. Robin Hardin, who co-founded of The Dog Park Project with Jane Larson, fought a difficult 16-month battle with pancreatic cancer. We also lost Katherine Carter who ran a doggy day-care center and was a generous donor and active fundraiser for The Dog Park Project. They will both be truly missed.

If You See Something, Say Something!
There has been vandalism and theft at our Dog Park. If you see any suspicious or illegal activities, please call the non-emergency police number at 505-428-3710.

Please good take care, and stay strong and safe!

Welcome to Wilsonville, the small dog park located next to the small parking lot. Thanks to the beautiful vision of and the generous donation from Barbara McIntyre, this fenced-in enclosure is designed specifically for dogs under 25 pounds. We're ecstatic to announce that the 3 dog water fountains are fully operational and ready to quench your pup's thirst after a long hike at the Dog Park. The best part is that they will function year-round!

April 4, 2020

Dear Dog and People Friends,

This is a strange and difficult time, and we are all trying to cope with unprecedented challenges. It was made truly heartbreaking when we learned of the passing of our dear friend and Dog Park patron, Barbara McIntyre, and her best pal, Wilson, last week. Barbara and Wilson were fixtures at our beloved Dog Park. Their bond was inseparable. The two of them spread love and friendship throughout the park and Santa Fe. We met Barbara when she donated money for a bench in Wilson’s honor. Then she came to us with the most delightful of ideas—she visualized a small dog park enclosure at the site of the old tennis courts. She thought there was a need for a safe place for small dogs and their owners to play and meet. She loved the location because it was easy walking distance from the small parking lot which would be especially nice for older patrons. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and soon we were working together on this exciting project. Currently we are awaiting testing of the site by Environmental Services before we get final approval. It is our top priority to build this small dog park, which Barbara lovingly named Wilsonville after her companion who could always be found by her side. At the opening of Wilsonville, we would love to have a celebration of Barbara’s life. We will keep you posted on our progress.

If you would like to make a donation in honor of Barbara and Wilson, Barbara created a $20,000 matching gift challenge to support the creation of the small dog park area. Click here to donate online or via US mail.

In the meantime, we are sending love and a wish for good health to you and your family, dogs, and friends.

PictureSanta Fe installing water fountains at Ortiz Dog Park

April 3, 2020

Trenching has begun for the water fountains which Bill Thornton donated to the Dog Park. We are so excited that this has begun.  The project has been more than a year in the making. As many of you may know, The Frank Ortiz Dog Park (flat area) sits on top of an old dump site. New Mexico Environmental Services have placed test wells at strategic points around the Dog Park to monitor the wells. To date, nothing hazardous has been found. Monitoring will be ongoing during the life of the park.  Building anything new at the park requires the involvement of the Santa Fe Parks Department and the NM Environmental Services Division.  Approval for the location of the water fountains came after a careful review of the site. As many of you know, Bill Thornton died just before Christmas last year. Bill was an ardent supporter of The Dog Park Project, and visited the park daily with his beloved dog, Bella. Bill was also a great lover of dogs, and he served on the board of the Santa Fe Humane Society.  So we are delighted to fulfill Bill’s wish for fresh drinking water at the park.

Below is the City of Santa Fe's Press Release regarding this construction project.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Frank Ortiz Dog Park Partially Closed For Construction March 30-April 3

Water Lines Being Installed For Dog Fountains

Dear Friends of The Dog Park,

Thank you for your generous and ongoing support of the Frank S. Ortiz Dog Park. We greatly appreciate every Dog Park patron and their furry friends who enjoy visiting The Dog Park and making it the best experience ever!

At The Dog Park Project, our mission is to provide, in conjunction with the City of Santa Fe Parks Division, enhancements to the Frank S. Ortiz Dog Park that will aid in the enjoyment of dogs and their people.

We have exciting updates to share with you, and we also need your help! During the winter of 2019, we were busy making enhancements, and there are more exciting improvements coming in 2020.

Winter 2019 Accomplishments:
  • Memorial Benches:  Three memorial benches have been graciously donated by patrons and installed, and three more benches are scheduled to be installed in the Springtime.
  • Matching Grant:  A $5000 Matching Gift Challenge in Memory of Tait has been met—thank you to Glenn Pearsall and all those donors who helped to make this a success.

Spring 2020 Projects:
  • Buy Art for Dogs:  Support The Dog Park Project by buying a beautiful sculpture created by John Alsip from REcycled and REpurposed objects. John generously donated a large body of his work, and we’ve already sold a number of his sculptures. Check them out and get yours today:  TheDogParkProject.org/Art.html
  • Dog Water Fountains:  Thanks to Bill Thornton’s donations, the city of Santa Fe will be installing 3 year-round dog watering stations during the first quarter of 2020.
  • A Small Dog Park Is Coming Soon:  We’re very excited about an altruistic donation from a patron to create a fenced-in small dog park area near the small parking lot. A matching grant program will be established to help fund this project--more details to come!
  • Spring Clean-up Day:  The Dog Park Clean-up Day is scheduled for April 25th from 9 am to Noon. Please mark your calendars—we look forward to seeing you!

As we begin an exciting new year, we are looking for both volunteers and board members to donate their time, skills and experience toward helping us to achieve the goals we have set out for The Dog Park. Some of these exciting endeavors include building the shade structure that was designed by Harry Perez-Daple, adding enhanced features to the small dog park area, and installing speed bumps and speed bump signs.

Based on feedback from Santa Fe Parks Division, there are unfortunately negative impacts which could result from the installation of a permanent public bathroom. Therefore, there will be two porta potties installed on a seasonal basis in the small parking lot.

If you’re interested in helping make The Dog Park the true jewel of Santa Fe, please join us at our informational meeting on Tuesday, February 25. We welcome your talent, ideas and enthusiasm! We’re seeking volunteers and board members who can help in the following areas:

Development
  • Fundraiser
  • Grant writing
  • Programming & event planning

Communications & Outreach
  • Community outreach
  • Foster dog-friendly business partnerships
  • Be an ambassador and recruit volunteers

Online & Social Media
  • Promote via social media
  • Create campaigns to increase followers
  • Engage visitors with contests, photo submissions, etc.

Project Management
  • Manage construction of shade structure
  • Research materials, costs, etc.
  • Oversee installation of shade structure

Great News! $5000 Matching Gift Challenge in Memory of Tait

Great news! This challenge has been met!
Picture
Tait, an Aussie-mixed dog, was adopted as a rescue from The  Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in New York when he was about 18 months old.  Tait loved his afternoon walks at The Frank Ortiz Dog Park.  Glenn Pearsall, his owner, said they always arrived about 4 pm each day and got to know many other regulars, although he knew more of the dog names than their owners!  Glenn has helped with spring clean-ups each year.  Tait passed away in July after a full life at the age of 15 1/2.  Tait is greatly missed and a day doesn't go by that Glenn and his wife Carol do not think of him.

We are happy to announce a $5,000 Matching Gift Challenge in Memory of Tait.  Glenn Pearsall will match dollar for dollar up to $5,000 to benefit The Frank Ortiz Dog Park.  This challenge is effective immediately and will last until December 2019.  Please join us in meeting this challenge.

Kindly make your donation online or by regular mail (369 Montezuma Avenue, #131 Santa Fe, 87501) to: The Dog Park Project and put In Memory of Tait in the memo line.

April 20, 2019 - DOG PARK CLEAN-UP DAY.  Please enjoy our photos from one of the most successful park clean-up days we have had in a long time.  Thank you all for coming out and making our park pristine.  As usual, Pam Geyer organized the actual clean-up. She provided buckets, bags, and guidance to all of the volunteers. There were prizes, coffee, and donuts for patrons and volunteers. It was a gorgeous spring day in Santa Fe, and a memorable time to interact with our beloved dog and people friends!

April 18, 2019 - THANK YOU AMY WESTPHAL!!!

We want to extend our gratitude to Amy Westphal, an accomplished artist and blacksmith who donated her time and expertise to build us a beautiful message board. This message board is centrally located at the dog park and has become a gathering place since the adjacent addition of a table and chairs.

The message board was constructed out of heavy-gauge steel posts, a corrugated steel roof, a locking plexiglass front cabinet face, and heavy duty bulletin board material. The message board was designed by Mike Nestor who is a well-known Santa Fe home designer. Mike donated his drawing time to the project, and Amy modified it to create a beautiful and important structure at our beloved dog park.

The message board serves two purposes: on the front side facing the parking lot, notices will be posted regarding safety, rules, updates, upcoming events, and valuable information for the patrons of the Frank S. Ortiz Dog Park. The opposite, east-facing side is an open message board for dog-friendly businesses, services, and lost and found notices.

December 2018
- We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our daily patrons and donors, Micki Lando-Brown (pictured with her granddaughter Casey and her dog Kahuna) this month. We will miss seeing Micki and Kahuna at the park and are honored she chose to support The Dog Park Project in our mission to enhance the Frank Ortiz Dog Park.

October 2018 - The cleanup last weekend was a huge success!  Thanks to all who participated.  We raised over $1500 that has been applied to the $5000 Challenge in Memory of Tait (see above)  Here are some photos of the day...

August 2018
- Since the Parking was resurfaced a number of patrons noticed people driving fast in the parking lot and have requested 10 MPH signs.  Today they were installed!  Thank you Randy Blake, Paint & Sign Supervisor, Santa Fe Public Works Department!

July 2018
 - Great News- The Dog Park is getting its parking lot resurfaced!

We want you to know that the material to be used is recycled road millings.  We are sure you have noticed the piles on the west side of the parking lot. This material is much cooler on the feet than asphalt (only 3 degrees hotter than the existing dirt surface).  And just to be sure we tested it with our pups and our bare feet.  We think it will make our park even better than it is now!

The parking lot is 3/4 completed.  We are waiting for additional recycled road millings.  These are expected 9/2018.  Thank you Javier Martinez,
Division Director. Public Work, Streets and Drainage Maintenance.  We really appreciate it.

April 21, 2018
- Thank you so much to everyone who came out and made this spring's clean up the best clean up ever!! A special shout out to Sherry and Ned for hauling in 42 pounds of dog waste and setting the new pickup record! We would also like to thank all of our donors and volunteers, none of this would be possible without you ❤️ The park is looking as beautiful as ever and we could not be more excited to continue making memories at such a beloved community treasure- the Frank Ortiz Dog Park- with all of you!

Local artist Hillary Vermont has started to work with The Dog Park Project on our new signage! Hillary is an amazing painter and fellow dog lover. We could not be more thrilled that she is allowing us to use her artwork for The Dog Park Project. Hillary is at the Sunday Railyard Artisan Market inside the Farmers Pavilion and she also sells her work on Etsy: hillaryvermont.etsy.com

What People are Saying...

Here are what some Bring Fido, one of our favorite dog-friendly business, clients' have said about the Frank S. Ortiz Dog Park...

Awesome Dog Park!
"Awesome! Main reason to come to Santa Fe besides the art galleries, museums, Traders Joe's and restaurants. Hard pack and soft sand trails. Lots of scrub brush which sometimes is decorated. No supplied water or poop bags so bring your own. Best to walk in cool of the day in warmer months and vice versa in winter. Can be very windy but the views of mtns and Santa Fe make up for any blowing. Locals provide chairs and tables to enjoy relaxing with your furry friends. Bowls of water and grocery bags can be found supplied by local visitors. It's free and quite large, maybe 50+ acres and the local dogs and people are very friendly. Best dog park in NM."
-Ann

Best Dog Park
"With approximately 135 acres to hike with your furry four-leggeds, Frank S. Ortiz Park is one of the best I've ever seen. There are usually poop bags available throughout the entry of the park ad occasionally water for your pets. So many trails to walk/hike you'll never be bored."
-Deborah

Wow!
"Best dog park I've ever been to! My dog and I are traveling from Illinois to California and this is our favorite spot by far! I would move to Santa Fe just to be near this place. Feels like you're hiking through the wilderness, lots of friendly dogs and owners to tag along with. Breathtaking views overlooking Santa Fe. Only tip is that there's no fence near the parking lot, so if your dog tends to stray, keep him on a leash until you get well into the park. I hope I can come back, my dog was in heaven!"
-Grisby

Loved this place!
"This place was great for our two Weims! Loved it!!! Lots of space where they could run free! Can get really hot here, so be careful of temperature. One place to get water (under north shelter house that is at west entrance); consider bringing your own. Not too many cacti, but be careful. Not fenced but the park is so big, doesn't border any big roads and our dogs have pretty good recall so it wasn't any issue. There was an arroyo running through the park, so the hiking was interesting for us too...."
-Allison

Frank Ortiz Dog Park
"A great place to take your dog to socialize, or on a short hike with nice views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains."
-Knut

Beautiful Views And Great For Dogs

"I really liked this park because there were trails for dogs to run on and a "social" area for those dogs that like to ruckus and play with other dogs. There are also nice views for the humans to enjoy."
-Heather

The Dog Park Project

Founders

Jane Larson and Robin Hardin have spent countless hours of pure
joy at The Frank Ortiz Dog Park with their beloved dogs SoHo and Zoe. Through the years they learned that the park is a sacred place for dogs and their people.

With 138 acres of open spaces and trails it is home to some of the most spectacular views in Santa Fe.
It is also a welcoming place to socialize, play fetch, hike with your dog, unwind after a day's work, or gather with friends.  Everyone who passes through the park has an important and sometimes amazing story to tell.  Each year thousands of locals as well as guests from other states and countries visit the park. All are amazed by its beauty and the joy that they find here.

In 2017 Jane and Robin founded The Dog Park Project to raise funds for the purpose of enhancing the park. The 501(c)3 organization exists solely for dogs of the park and their people.

With the help of patrons, volunteers,  the Santa Fe Parks Department, and a City Counselor, many improvements have been
made including new signage, new waste barrels, enhanced maintenance, improved parking surface, a new message board, and other enhancements.  Other enhancements are on the way including automatic watering fountains, a shade structure, and additional benches.
